Have you ever noticed that the more often you do something, the more likely you are to keep repeating that action in the future?
Sometimes this is good. Such as when we start doing healthy things on a regular basis — like waking up early to meet our workout buddy.
And sometimes, we get involved in a rinse-and-repeat situation that's not so healthy: like last weekend, when I caught myself mindlessly unwrapping chocolate eggs. (And why?! They weren't even that good!)
Performing the same actions repeatedly — moment by moment, day by day, and week by week — is how we form habits. Good and bad.
The opposite of this is also true — the less often we do something, the less likely we are to perform that action in the future. For example, if we've gotten out of the habit of going to the gym, it'll require some extra effort to overcome our natural resistance. In other words, we'll have to motivate ourselves to stop the old habit (sleeping in), so we can give the new, healthier habit a chance to take over.
This can take time. And it can even be a little uncomfortable at first.
But here's the deal — the rewards that healthier habits bring are well worth that initial discomfort. Especially if you consider what the potential payoff might be.
I'm talking about habits such as starting a mindfulness practice, eating a mostly plant-powered diet, and finding time to exercise. Habits like that have the potential to help you:
- Feel healthier, leaner, and stronger in your body
- Manage a healthy weight
- Improve blood pressure, cholesterol, and overall heart health
- Reduce cancer risk
- Balance hormones
- Reduce stress
- Feel a renewed sense of energy and vigor for your life
In my upcoming spring session of Camp Kale, we explore the full power of momentum for healthier habits. It's like taking a virtual retreat. We take a break from unhealthier habits, so that we can focus on the daily habits, practices, and rituals that will bring balance and healing to the body, mind, and spirit.
What is Camp Kale anyway?

I can't say enough good things about Camp Kale. Monica has a sincere, approachable, and grounded style that invited me into the program and kept me hooked. She focuses on much more than food — offering a holistic approach to a life well lived by slowing down and being intentional.
I often feel paralyzed by all the information on health, exercise and diet available. The thing I most valued from the program is Monica's ability to synthesize information into simple actionable items. I'm grateful for Monica's calm and practical guidance and look forward to benefiting from the program again soon.
